Identity & Positioning Statements: The one thing you need to do before you build your author marketing funnel or start posting on socials

1–2 minutes

Your identity and positioning statements are the key to building SEO that drives the right traffic to your sales pages and the key to crafting hooks that reach your ideal readers.

You can find the complete training video with a Statement Builder spreadsheet (complete with drop-down menus so you don’t have to come up with everything from scratch) over in The Author Marketing Hub subscription.

These two statements are your secret sauce for selling more books. The hack to standing out in the crowd of authors and books.

Your book positioning statement can be a single statement or collection of statements that you use to build strong hooks geared towards your ideal readers. This tells readers why this book will feel like a familiar favorite to them -and- what special twist or emotional payoff you bring to this favorite.

Your author identity statement is similar, but is based on your writing style, your backlist, and your upcoming books as a whole. This tells readers what you write and why you’re different from other authors in your genre.

We use these two types of statements to fill in our hooks every single time. The hook is what stops the scroll. Your positioning and identity is what keeps them.

In the training video, I walk you through the purpose of each statement, how to build them using the spreadsheet, and how to create varieties for posting and testing more content.

Come back next week for Understanding Reach Platforms and Algorithms. I will talk about what to post, where to post it, and why.

Happy marketing!
